History ~

Waterfall in Santa Clarita, California area of Elsmere CanyonSanta Clarita was incorporated in December of 1987.  Until 1989, the city hall occupied a small storefont located next to a Suzuki shop along Soledad Canyon Road.  In 1989, city government's offices moved into the building it currently houses today.

Santa Clarita's strength lies in its ability to manage and invest its money well.  This has even lead to the city winning several awards in recognition of its abilities.  In fact, they have had success in their budgeting, received valuable funding from government grants and the revenue from their city sales tax has brought more money into their coffers that allows them to invest it back into the city, creating a wonderful place for its residents to live.

There are a total of five members on the city council and each member serves a four year term.  The residents of the City of Santa Clarita vote for these elected officials every other year.  The councilmembers' terms overlap each other, allowing a smoother transition between new officials.  Any resident who is old enough to vote is allowed to run for a seat on the council if they are interested.  They are even encouraged to join one of the city's committees or commissions.

In 1989, the first new park in Santa Clarita (in Canyon Country) was opened.  This was just the beginning of the City's investment in new facilities and other amenities built for the betterment of the community.  Some of the others included two parks, a community center, a sports complex, three Metrolink stations and over 14 miles of hiking and biking trails.

Santa Clarita realizes how important it is to invest its resources into the community, including its citizens.  This is how they have become such a self-sufficient city in a short amount of time.  They have increased the recreational opportunities made available to its citizens by offering a variety of year-round recreational activities and programs for a small cost to its residents.
