The beautiful community of Newhall is the oldest district in Santa Clarita, California. Before 1987 the community of Newhall was an unincorporated town, although it was independent. The first permanent Anglo settlers, settled in the Newhall community.
Newhall got its name from Henry Newhall, a well-known businessman of the community. Newhall is home to the famous silent movie maker's mansion at William Hart County Park. The park features tours of the famous mansion. Newhall has also been a hot-spot for several movies over the years. In 1954, Suddenly was filmed in Newhall and starred Frank Sinatra, Nancy Gates, James Gleason and Sterling Hayden.
An important date in Newhall is April 6,1970, the Newhall Incident. Four officers of the California Highway Patrol were doing a routine traffic stop and were shot to death by two armed criminal. This incident helped lead the way for higher safety for all officers across the United States.

The Newhall School District provides public education for Newhall as well as Valencia and Stevenson Ranch. The district is made up of ten elementary schools. Dr. Marc Winger is the superintendent of the district. Wiley Canyon Elementary, Stevenson Ranch Elementary, Peachland Elementary, Oak Hills Elementary, Meadows Elementary, Valencia Valley Elementary, Pico Canyon Elementary, Old Orchard Elementary, Newhall Elementary and McGarth Elementary all serve students in kindergarten through sixth grades.
