History ~
San Clemente has offered a unique combination of personality, luck and foresight throughout history. While savvy marketing has transformed this stretch of land, it was once in geographical isolation like many other small towns in California. This isolation helped protect the town from mass urban sprawl that most of the region has seen.
Since people do love beautiful places, the population of San Clemente has grown at a reasonable rate over the years. However, you will find the town has evolved differently than its neighboring communities. The city was one of the first master-planned communities of completely open land in the US. Founder Ole Hanson laid out an expansive plan before a single structure was even erected. The plan included the Spanish Colonial architectural style buildings including homes, restaurants, parks, public buildings, clubhouses, a public pool and a fishing pier.
