A silent film star and director, William S. Hart was owner of the 265 acre Horseshoe Ranch, which is presently home to the William S. Hart Park and Museum. Included on display are William S. Hart's impressive collection of furnishings, Western art, Native American artifacts and momentos of early Hollywood.
Located just a few minutes from Santa Clarita, Mentryville is a historical 19th Century western town, giving visitors an authentic look into California's "black gold" boomtown era. The "Big House" is a 13-room Victorian mansion erected in 1898 by Charles Alexander Mentry.
The St. Francis Dam was completed in May 1926 and came crashing down in March, 1928, causing the death of 470 people throughout the San Francisquito Canyon. The destruction of this event was second only to the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire in terms of lives lost.
Built by Frank Walker around 1920, the Walker Cabin is located in the Placerita Canyon Natural Area. The cabin has fully restored and refurnished to its original glory to provide visitors with a glimpse of what life was like in the Placerita Canyon for a pioneering family. Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park is located north of Santa Clarita, off the Antelope Valley Freeway (SR-14). This 750 acre reserve once served as a hideout for outlaw Tiburcio Vasquez and sheltered the Tatavian Indians. Rock climbing is a natural inclination for this area, but horseback riding and hiking are also great ways to spend your time here. Ed Davis Park is located in Townsley Canyon, just off the I-5 at Pico Canyon. It is full of hiking and mountain bike trails, streams and natural woodlands. For more information, call 661-255-2974.
Placerita Canyon Nature Area is a 350 acre wildlife sanctuary located in the Santa Clarita Valley. The park has seven trails covering more than 12 miles that range from the 0.16 mile Botany Trail to the 2.45 mile Los Pinetos Trail, providing spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and Channel Islands. The Heritage Trail is paved to allow stroller and wheelchair access. You can take a guided nature tour throughout the year. The Castaic Lake Water Agency Conservatory Garden and Learning Center is a great place to go for a nice afternoon with the family and is free to the public. It is located at 27234 Bouquet Canyon Road in Santa Clarita. You can take a self-guided tour through the 7 acre garden that features over 1300 rose bushes. Enjoy a scenic drive along Santa Clarita's Historic Route 6 (presently the Sierra Highway). Once the main thoroughfare between Santa Clarita and Los Angeles, Route 6 spans 14 states and more than 3562 miles. It is also the only national highway honoring veterans of the Civil War.
